Caroline Gilmour-White
'Freely you have received, freely give’
Caroline Gilmour-White is our CMS (now incorporating SAMS) mission partner who has been serving inParaguay since 2001. She is working for the Diocese of Paraguay in two main roles - as a diocesan librarian and a coordination of mission trips from the UK. Within these two roles, she also works as an events planner, accounts clerk and translator.
The Anglican Diocese of Paraguay is based in three regions, in and around the cities of Asunción and Concepción and in the huge Chaco area, home of the indigenous tribal communities. The capital, Asunción, has central and urban churches with a variety of social ministries and an ongoing programme of biblical studies. There are two schools and an Early Years teacher training college, a Foster Home for abandoned babies, and clubs for children and young people. Marriage Encounter and Youth Encounter ministries are run for school parents and students.
As part of one of her two main roles, Caroline coordinates annual visits from the many volunteers who, through Mission Paraguay (a UK based organisation), come to support diocesan projects that relieve hardship and needs. There are many needs, for Paraguay is one of South America’s poorest countries. It´s twice the size of the UK, has a population of 6 million, 40% of whom live below the poverty line and the minimum wage is £1 an hour. Families struggle to survive and in a country with marked differences in living standards, the poor are forgotten.
Caroline first came to Paraguay in 2001, inspired by the words of Jesus: ‘Freely you have received, freely give.’ Wanting to use some of her skills, she is now using them all. Her work depends very much on trusting God for wisdom and ideas, to ensure that people can make the change from a culture of dependency one of self help and sustainability. Before coming to Paraguay, she worked as an English teacher in Birmingham and before that, was a mature student at Hull University studying English and Spanish.
